Welcome Spring -- We Herald Your Arrival!
Now that we have moved our clocks ahead one hour, it seems those coveted warmer days are that much closer. Our views from the Farm are telling us that spring is here as well!
Your first CSA share will be filled with so many happy harbingers of the season – early carrots and green garlic to name a couple – and we desperately wanted to surprise you all with the prettiest radishes you’ve ever seen. But, apparently, our deer friends got to them before we could and made off with this week’s harvest. As Doris Day would sing, “Que será, será…” Rest assured, there will be more radishes in the future.
Saint Patrick’s Day is this Sunday and if you can hold off on enjoying your cabbage before then, we have a great idea for a spin on the traditional Irish dish, colcannon. Typically made with potatoes and cabbage, we plan to make ours with the equally starchy Jerusalem artichokes (also known as sunchokes.) Their mellow flavor will pair wonderfully with the cabbage. For you non-vegetarians out there, maybe throw in a handful of lardon. Crispy bacon makes everything taste better!
Mentone’s own Farmer Hab has added his heirloom corn polenta to the basket while Chef Corey Hinkel has produced a stunning brioche made with our own duck eggs. If you have any bread left by the weekend, make a plate of pan perdu for someone you love using thick slices of this brioche. Syrup optional.
We are giddy to be able to include our ‘first flow’ goat cheese for our CSA subscribers. As you may surmise by the name, this mellow-yet-grassy chevre is in limited supply and we think it is extremely special. In every delightful bite, you can practically conjure up visions of frolicking goats in open pastures, happily nibbling away at early grass shoots and tender wild herbs.
In closing, we are delighted you have joined us in this 21st season of the Stone Hollow Farmstead CSA. We cannot wait to share the best our farm (and those of our friends’ farms) has to offer each week. Welcome friends and WELCOME SPRING!
