SUMMER 2017, WEEK 3

Deborah Stone

NOTES FROM THE FARM

Each week, owner of Stone Hollow Farmstead, Deborah Stone will offer a behind-the-scenes look at life on the farm, in hopes of sharing the entire journey of our farm to your table.

By the end of this week, we will probably have a harvest of the most dahlias we've ever had. We will have them at Pepper Place on Saturday and around town this week in our flower carts. These beautiful blooms need homes, so please tell your friends!

This time of year means tomatoes and peaches (two items that were not in your bag this week). The tomatoes at the farm are so big and heavy from all the rain. We have been staking them up to keep them growing and harvesting some huge green ones. We will hopefully have some for y'all next week. Decent peaches this week were hard to find. After speaking to some of our peach farmers, we've learned this year's crop may not be so robust. The lack of a decent winter has stunted the crops. We'll keep looking, as we need them for our canning operation. We'll be sure to share.

Electricity is being run into a walk-in cooler we're building adjacent to the milking parlor. It's for bouquet assembly and our flower handling room, which we are badly in need of. Once the work is finished, it will relieve some room in the office next the creamery and Botanikō lab.

This past week, we planted asparagus and fava beans. We also harvested plenty of rose geranium, which in the coming days we will be distilling it. It's one of the more important crops on the farm, as we use it for skincare as well as food. It's a vasoconstrictor and is great for skin reddening. It smells wonderful but also tastes wonderful. We love it in jellies and lemonades and cocktails. It goes great with citrus!

We love sharing our week-to-week with you via Tuesday Table. Share with friends and be sure to let us know what we're doing well and what we're missing. Your input will only make us better. See you next week!
