NOTES FROM THE FARM
Each week, owner of Stone Hollow Farmstead, Deborah Stone will offer a behind-the-scenes look at life on the farm, in hopes of sharing the entire journey of our farm to your table.
Last Thursday evening, some severe straight-line winds came through the farm just as the storm moved in. The damage was abrupt, knocking over a fig tree. The dahlia beds saw their worst damage at Stone Hollow. Many plants needed triage the next morning, with supports placed around the bases to prop up the limbs coming just out of the tubers. A before and after picture can be seen below at the end of 'Notes.'
The still was at work yesterday distilling artemisia. It's another precious plant used in our skin care. The flowering plant had such a high essential oil content that the distillate almost clogged the hoses! The blue color (seen in the gallery) is due to the high presence of azulene. Azulene's anti-inflammatory properties are one of the reasons why we love artemisia (aside from its fresh, green aroma). Typically, essential oils extracted through steam distillation are done so using dried plant matter. We distill fresh plant matter at its season's prime to extract hydrosols. While we often get some oils mixed in with the hydrosol, we rarely get this much.
At Pepper Place farmers market last Saturday, we picked up some beautiful tomatoes from Burnette farms. We took plenty back with us to the farm to rev back up bloody mary season. This week our kitchen is spending plenty of time turning those plump tomatoes into Ordinary Mary, one of our seven bloody mary mixes. We also harvested plenty of cucumbers late last week and put them up as bread and butter pickles. Some of those will be canned, and others will be chopped up and mixed with our hen eggs to become our egg salad.
