Deborah Stone

NOTES FROM THE FARM

Each week, owner of Stone Hollow Farmstead, Deborah Stone will offer a behind-the-scenes look at life on the farm, in hopes of sharing the entire journey of our farm to your table.

We hope everyone had a wonderful and rewarding Independence Day. For the majority of members who are home and were able to pick-up, enjoy your peaches! For the member's who are still at the beach or the lake, we will see y'all next week. With The Pantry closed, team members were able to get a little rest and relaxation. Deborah took advantage of the quiet weekend and caught up on some much needed gardening and distilling. Pictured to the right is a shot we got of the beginning of a co-distillation of thyme and lemon basil. While some of the hydrosols we prepare are blended after being distilled, others are distilled together as a co-distillation. The idea is that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts," and the distilled yielded is more than simply a combination of the two herbs' distillates -- it's like a fine wine blend or a beautifully aged natural perfume. Some other co-distillates we are preparing this week include: rose geranium and lemon; bee balm, thyme, and yarrow (a flower related to the sunflower); and lemon verbena and calendula.

Besides distilling, we also extract herbs, flowers, and other plants in exquisite nut oils. Over the holiday break, Deborah has been making a variety of botanical extracts. They are formulated for different skin types and conditions, and the way in which they are extracted allows for them to retain their active ingredients. These plant extracts we call Facial Concentrates will be bottled and brought into town along with all the new hydrosols over the coming weeks, so make sure to check them out at The Pantry.

Last week we had some new members of the farm arrive. We ordered white peacock eggs in anticipation of Alex's wedding next spring. We tried them under hens, but the hens were not interested (pictured below). Luckily, a turkey volunteered and has since become territorial over them. The eggs are expected to hatch around the 24th, at which point we will put a lot of energy into giving them great names. Have an awesome rest of the week, and we will see everyone in just five days!
