Here Comes the Sun // First Day of Spring

Beets.jpg

Days like these call to mind that 1980 Jackson Five song, “Can You Feel It?” – spring feels just that close. In fact, it IS that close; the first official day of spring is this Wednesday, March 20th. The forsythia and spirea blooms have popped. Crocus and daffodils were not far behind and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, providing snowflake-like cascades all over town.

Speaking of plants, we hope you’ll make plans to join us for our First Annual Farm Tour and Plant Sale on Sunday March 31st, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm in Harpersville. Pick up some ready-to-be-transplanted-to-your-garden vegetables, heirloom and modern tomatoes, pots of herbs, flowers and seeds. Help us release beneficial bugs (including lady bugs!) every hour in the garden and join us on a tour of the dairy and flower farm at 1:00 pm. Of course, no visit to Stone Hollow Farmstead would be complete without plenty of opportunities to visit our baby goats and Day Spring Dairy lambs. Rounding out the day will be an array of artists, makers and musicians, as well as tastings of our pickled vegetables and award-winning chevre. We can’t wait to share the farm with all of our friends!

Until then, we enjoy sharing the best of our farm and that of our friends at Mount Laurel and Belle Meadow and Farmer Hab in Mentone in this week’s CSA. Your basket includes cilantro, pea tendrils, asparagus, Chioggia beets and plenty of other great spring vegetables to help celebrate the arrival of the season. Everything is best when its eaten fresh but we love offering additional recipes for ways to enjoy these vegetables (see below).
