One of the first treasures you will discover in this week’s basket are the squash blossoms. The season for these is as fleeting as any so take a moment to savor this treat and contemplate how you might like to prepare the blossoms tonight or tomorrow.
Squash blossoms are especially delicious when filled with a goat cheese stuffing and flash fried. Try blending a bit of snipped fresh herbs and lemon zest with our signature goat cheese and perhaps a tablespoon of panko or other breadcrumbs. Pipe this mixture into each blossom. Dip each blossom into a batter of 2/3 cup flour whisked into ¾ cup club soda then fry the blossoms in a cast iron skillet filled 1”-deep with 375* oil. Drain on paper towels and serve immediately.
Or you might try José Andrés’ recipe for what he calls a ‘cheeseadilla’. You can find that recipe here. Both ideas sound delicious so we hope to get our hands on more blossoms soon and try them both!
Rounding out today’s basket are all the usual late-summer suspects with whom we love to conspire: beefsteak tomatoes from Jerry Gladden of Chandler Mountain, cherry tomatoes from Farmer Hab in Mentone. There are yellow squash from Chilton county and then Chilton county peaches from Farmer Wayne Headley. Blount county okra and Vidalia onions from Georgia beg to be thrown on the grill alongside your next Delmonico steak or Kansas City strip. Belle Meadow Farms has supplied us with russet potatoes which are the ideal conveyance for butter, sour cream, and bacon bits when baked until fork tender.
Whatever dishes you put together this week, we consider it an honor and a pleasure to be a part of your meals. By connecting our customers with local farmers, we aim to improve the health and well-being of this community and beyond. Thank you.
