Rain, glorious rain!

This Week’s Basket

This Week’s Basket

Let it rain!
Like all of our farmer friends, we have been desperate for a good soaking from Mother Nature and this past week, we got it. It almost feels like a harbinger for autumn, doesn’t it? It won’t be too long before we start to see fewer tomatoes and more hard squashes. It is almost too easy to wish away the last of the warm weather, as we all look toward the new beginnings of fall: football, harvest time, more intimate family get-togethers. But let’s pinkie-promise to stay in the moment, and enjoy the waning days before Labor Day. Just one look at this week’s basket and you will know we are still in reaping the summer bounty.

This week’s share is classic end-of-summer-early-fall: peas, butter beans and cherry tomatoes from Chilton County just south of here. There are heirloom tomatoes from Farmer Hab in Mentone and butternut squash and cayenne peppers from Jerry Gladden. We’re happy to be able to include some green beans from Georgia and creamer potatoes from Texas. Sounds like Sunday supper may come early this week, with ingredients like these. Warm up that loaf of peasant bread from Corey Hinkel and everyone will be happy to gather at the table.

From our own farm in Harpersville, we have more of that fantastic okra that has been yielding strong all summer, peppers, dill, goat cheese, and dahlias. Ahh, is there any flower that just looks happier to be a flower, than a dahlia? You can’t help but smile when you see their open-faced and unapologetic bright cheer. Now, you could keep these blooms all to yourself but it might be nicer to share some with a friend who could use some of that brightness. Or maybe you just pick up an extra bouquet to share the floral love.

We hope you have a fantastic week and a safe and happy Labor Day – we look forward to seeing all of YOUR happy faces next week!
