Layer Upon Layer
Sure, temperatures may still be in the 90’s (and showing no signs of abating) but we can see October from here and its promise of cooler temperatures. The season’s first pumpkins are in this week’s CSA share and we are so excited! And not just any pumpkin; the Jarrahdales are especially lovely with their cool blue hue. Set this guy on your kitchen counter or by your front door and tell that heat to take a hike.
Until Mother Nature decides we’re due for more seasonally appropriate temperatures, we’ll gladly take all the tomatoes that thrive in this heat, especially the sungold cherry tomatoes from Belle Meadow and the heirloom varieties from Farmer Hab. Speaking of Hab, he sends us more of those spicy Russian kolobok onions this week. We used some last week in a sauté with shallots and garlic and a knob of butter. Cooked over low heat, the flavors were able to meld and mellow perfectly. Add in some fresh thyme and finish with a splash of good champage vinegar and you have a lovely base for fresh pasta or a salad dressing – let your imagination run wild.
We are looking forward to enjoying the Murasaki sweet potatoes from Belle Meadow as well. These are a Japanese variety so why not let your recipe go there too? Try this Miso-Glazed sweet potato as tonight’s side to a grilled pork tenderloin. You might even choose to sauté slices of Fuji apple from Mountain View Orchards to spoon over the meat as it comes off the grill. Yum.
If you happen to have any of that pork tenderloin left over, use some of Corey Hinkel’s swoon-worthy ciabatta to make a sandwich – be sure to layer on some grilled vegetables, a drizzle of good olive oil and maybe some of our own goat’s milk feta and a few sliced figs. Trust us: lightly press down on that top slice of bread so the flavors all run deliciously together. Make that sandwich bigger than you planned because somebody you’re eating with is gonna want a bite. Again, trust us on this one.
