Winter is Coming
It is a funny thing to think about the fact that we are presently in Week One of our Winter CSA season. Someone needs to tell Mother Nature we’re expecting cooler temperatures. Until then, we’ll revel in the bounty that these daily forecasts provide. Like more heirloom tomatoes from Farmer Hab, as well as more of those spicy Russian kolobok onions. We have loved coming up with all kinds of places to add these onions where they definitely impart an unexpected but welcomed kick: egg salad, sautéed greens, weekend omelets… We’ve also been known to keep onion slices in cold water in the refrigerator; doing this mellows the flavor a bit and imparts a lovely crunch to anything we add them to. Try it!
Tuscan kale bundles from Belle Meadow mean we have your dark-leafy-greens-craving satisfied. Beyond tossing your de-ribbed kale leaves with lemon juice, olive oil, grated garlic, fresh Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper, how do you take your kale? We think these hearty leaves would pair beautifully with our own blackberry salad dressing and dollops of Stone Hollow Farmstead goat cheese. Belle Meadow also shares more of their French breakfast radishes this week as well as their Covington sweet potatoes and some heavenly yellow squash.
From Athens, Alabama, we’ll have Golden Delicious apples, ideal for school lunches or peeled and sliced into a quick weeknight crisp, like this one.
Blue Lake green beans from Blount county practically beg to be thrown into a sizzling hot wok and flash fried. Shower with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and pair with this grilled pork tenderloin for an easy weeknight meal.
And because we love to spoil y’all, we always like to include some unexpected treats in your weekly basket. This week that means a fresh bottle of Hamm’s hot pepper sauce. This is the same fantastic concoction Chef Tim Hontzas puts out for all of his guests at Johnny’s Restaurant in Homewood. We love it in anything from soups and stews to revving up meat marinades. Corey Hinkel adds his signature seasonal pumpkin loaf to this week’s basket. We dare you to try and get home without tearing off an end to nibble on before dinner tonight. Maybe it has been that kind of week for you too but we swear pumpkin makes everything better right about now. We think Mother Nature would agree too.
