Mandoline Rain

Fresh strawberries

We get it.

Sometimes the contents of this box can be downright intimidating. Things like kale and radishes are already pretty darn approachable but throw in some kohlrabi to the mix, and well, you might not know how to even get started!

At first glance, kohlrabi looks like it might be kin to the rutabaga but no, kohlrabi claims broccoli and cauliflower at family reunions. The kohlrabi this week comes from our friends at Ireland Farms and is magnificent. Pull out that mandoline (this one is very affordable and won’t hog your valuable kitchen cabinet real estate)  and turn that kohlrabi bulb into matchstick-sized pieces in a snap for this recipe

Also from Ireland Farms are the most tender pea shoots you can imagine. We swear, these might just be the epitome of spring – their delicate nature too fickle for days with any heat or nights with any chill – an ephemeral vegetable if there ever was one. They need little adornment to be enjoyed.

We might say the same for the asparagus from Farmer Hab in Mentone which need only be blanched for less than a minute before being plunged into an ice bath, preserving their enviable green color. Drain and serve with crisped pancetta or lardons or a tablespoon of gremolata.

From our own Harpersville, AL farm, we have tender bok choy and early leeks. Trim the ends of each and plunge in cool water until ready to drain and cook. They are near-perfect raw so they just need a little time in a searing-hot skillet to jolt them to deliciousness. Pair with sticky rice and hoisin-glazed pork chops for a great weeknight meal.

This week also sees the first strawberries of the season, which we’ve been coaxing along at the farm. Longer, warmer days will bring out more of the sweet-tartness we crave so much; let them shine in a cake like this one  which is perfect for dessert or maybe even breakfast the next day!

Rounding out the basket is fresh kale from Love Light Farm, Hamm Farm radishes, and savory olive bread from Corey Hinkel. We look forward to hearing how you enjoy this week’s basket. Be sure to check in on our group’s private Facebook page for more recipes and box updates, as the season progresses.
