Say It With Us... Green Garlic & Ramp Pesto | 2023 CSA Week 5

A dark moody scene of ramp pesto, fresh strawberries, red onions, and carrots

As we revel in the cool season extension granted by Mother Nature, our early summer produce will arrive a bit later than usual.

However, today's CSA box is packed with a bountiful harvest of familiar items, along with a few unexpected and unique ones that are sure to excite your taste buds.

First up, we have the vibrant green asparagus from Habersham Farms, perfect for grilling or roasting. Next, we have a delicious mix of red and green loose-leaf lettuce from Hamm Farm and baby kale from Stone Hollow Farmstead.
We all know onions are a kitchen staple, so Farmer Hamm has brought in fresh-pulled red onions, and Mary has reserved a box of sweet baby Vidalia onions from our pickling kitchen to share once more. Plus, I couldn't resist pulling a green garlic from the field yesterday to share with our CSA members. And, to top it off, our farm kitchen has prepared ramp pesto, a flavorful combination of seasonal herbs that is perfect for adding to pasta, sandwiches, or roasted vegetables. The box also includes a bundle of freshly picked carrots, which are great for snacking or adding to stews and soups.

Our strawberries will keep producing for a while, so be prepared to freeze some if you need a break. And, don't forget, blueberries will be available starting in June! In addition to the produce, the box includes a loaf of rosemary bread from Hinkle's Bread made with Cory’s old-world techniques that create bread with a crispy crust and a soft, fluffy interior.

To add a touch of spring color and texture to your home and table, the box includes fresh eggs, sweet pea, and poppy flower bundles. Although the sweet peas are not edible, they will still make a beautiful addition to your decor.

Overall, the Stone Hollow Farmstead's CSA week 5 is a perfect mix of fresh produce, bread, and flowers that will inspire you to cook, bake, and decorate with the season's best offerings.

KALE MIX

We originally planted 2 delicate green lettuces for the spring CSA, but nature nixed that plan with the last freeze. Thankfully, we're adaptable and it's pretty impossible to kill kale! This mix is a red and green blend of baby kales, packed with vitamins and nutrients. Massage them with olive oil to turn the leaves tender, and toss in a salad or roast with sea salt for a crispy treat.

STRAWBERRIES

Sweet and juicy, strawberries are a beloved spring and early summer fruit rich in antioxidants, and delicious to eat—whether served fresh or baked into desserts.

FARM FRESH EGGS

Brought to you by the SHF Hens!

Our chickens roam freely without antibiotics or hormones to slow them down, living out on the land where grass, bugs, and other natural offerings make up most of their diet. This combination creates richly flavored eggs with firm, thick whites and bright yellow yolks that stand tall.
Impress your guests with a perfectly aesthetic fried egg that won't run around the pan, with buttery-golden centers high in protein that are absolutely delicious.

ASPARAGUS

Our Asparagus comes from Habersham farms in Mentone, AL, where Farmer Hab has grown it for years. A delicious vegetable high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, it can be eaten raw, steamed, or roasted. One of my family favorites is to sautée it with a white gravy topped with chopped, boiled eggs and fresh herbs.
