Multigrain Bread / Hinkel’s Bakery

Multigrain Bread / Hinkel’s Bakery

When you pick up your CSA basket today, we can bet that your first thought will be “How can I not just eat all of this tonight?!”

We get it.

That Romanesco cauliflower from Hamm Farms begs to be front-and-center. It is just so delicious while managing to be both simple and complex in all its fractal beauty. We dare you to take a deep look at those florets and try to determine where one begins and another ends.

Hamm Farms’ mixed beet bundles probably want to be roasted so you can slip those earthy skins right off. We’re partial to pickling these or just adding straight to your favorite salad blend, with some fresh goat cheese, of course. As for the Lacinato kale from Belle Meadow? It is so tender that it requires only a little citrus and garlic to be massaged into the leaves before adding that shower of freshly shaved Parmesan. If you are feeling especially extravagant, sauté up the pearl oyster mushrooms from Southern Organics and add them to your kale. You could choose to confit the fingerling potatoes from Farmer Hab if you really want to go all out.

Dessert is really where this basket shines though, where we see the first peaches of the season. As cool as this morning’s temperatures were, can you believe it?! We are kind of pinching ourselves to have these beauties from Burnette Farms in nearby Thorsby, AL. Of course, there are more strawberries this week and we just cannot get enough of them.  Whether eaten over the kitchen sink or stirred into our yogurt, we’re in heaven with the ruby fruits.

So, when you’ve exhausted your basket’s contents and it is still only Friday, make plans to come see us – and all of the other farmers we adore! – this Saturday at the Pepper Place Market.

Walk like an Egyptian

Sunchokes / Habersham Farms - Mentone, Alabama

Sunchokes / Habersham Farms - Mentone, Alabama

You’ve probably heard of Creeping Jenny and Climbing Roses but are you familiar with Egyptian Walking Onions?  This allium species is new for us this year and has been so much fun to watch come up on the farm!

These onions are early harbingers of spring, shooting up little green spikes when the ground is still cold. Once the stalks get to be about three-feet tall, a cluster of bulbs begins to emerge, making them top-heavy, causing them to tip over. These bulb clusters reseed themselves, making them appear to be literally travelling across your garden. The flavor profile is mild and you can certainly use them anywhere you’d use a traditional spring onion – we love them in salads.

But Egyptian Walking Onions are not the only fun find in this week’s CSA basket. We’re delighted to offer more sunchokes this week, from Habersham Farms. Use these is any dish where you might use a small potato. They can be roasted whole or sliced into a gratin with layers of creamy Fontina cheese, boiled until tender and mashed with salt, pepper and fresh cream and butter, or cubed and added to a hearty vegetable soup. We’re equally excited about the honeysuckle-marinated goat cheese. This particular flavor is especially dreamy and evocative of lazy Summer afternoons redolent of that heady scent. It is perfect on its own but perhaps elevated by a little drizzle of honey and a sprinkling of fresh lavender flowers. Honestly though, this cheese needs no culinary foil to shine.

The remainder of your basket will be welcome and familiar – tomatoes from Greenleaf Nursery, shiitakes from Grandview Farms, cucumbers and napa cabbage from Belle Meadow, strawberries from Mountain View Orchards, and pinto beans from down in Dothan. Rye bread from Hinkel’s Bakery and jalapeño hot sauce from Hamm Farms offer a little bite to the mix. Corey’s bread would be fantastic, enjoyed with a smear of cold butter and some thin slices of cucumbers and fresh dill. Maybe even top with a few slices of Egyptian Walking Onions!

From our own farm, we’ll have that honeysuckle-marinated goat cheese as well as fresh herbs bundles and some happy snapdragons. We dare you not to smile as you tote your basket to the car, dreaming of what you’ll make first with this bounty!

A Fresh Take on Dinner

Strawberries / Verbena, Alabama

Strawberries / Verbena, Alabama

This week’s CSA basket has a little bit of something for everyone. There are collards from Belle Meadow, perfect for slow-braising and serving with a vinegary barbecued pork butt this weekend. The Belle Meadow little gem lettuce pairs perfectly with Greenleaf Nursery’s hothouse cucumbers and slicing tomatoes. Whip up a green goddess dressing with our signature buttermilk and fresh herbs and even your pickiest of eaters will be requesting seconds.

For your mid-week entrée, we’re thinking something vegetarian. Sauté a few sliced spring onions from Hamm Farms in our butter (if you still have any left from last week!) and when they’ve gotten good and soft, add the aquaponic oyster mushrooms from Southern Organics. Only keep on the heat for a few minutes so the mushrooms are still a little firm.  Meanwhile, bring a pot of salted water to boil and cook your favorite pasta (we like the wide pappardelle here) just to al dente. In the last 30 seconds of your pasta cook time, add your English peas from Dothan for a quick cook. Drain the pasta and peas and toss with the onions and mushrooms. Garnish with a nice chop of fresh herbs. You could totally take this dish to the next level by adding in some shaved asparagus from Farmer Hab and swirling in a few discs of our own creamy goat cheese.  Dinnertime cannot come soon enough!

The strawberries are really coming in these days and are super plentiful; so much so that you might feel good about sharing some of these, this week from Verbena, AL  -- that is, if they make it home from your CSA pick-up site without being consumed first.

We’d love to hear what you’re making with all of the gorgeous spring produce and are always on the hunt for new ideas ourselves. Be sure to tag us in your Instagram posts: @StoneHollowFarmstead and @FarmStandbyStoneHollow when you share the love on-line.  Thank you again for making us a part of your week. We love sharing our passion and our life’s work with you!”

Tender is the Season

Strawberries / Mountain View Orchard- Jemison, Alabama

Strawberries / Mountain View Orchard- Jemison, Alabama

How did everyone like the popcorn rice featured in last week’s basket? We are dying to hear your feedback! When you are ready to replenish your supply, please head down to our new brick-and-mortar FarmStand storefront location in Pepper Place. There you can stock up on 1# and 5# bags. We agree – we can never go back to plain old rice again either!

And if you were one of the hundreds of friends who came to see our new digs this past Saturday during regular farmers market hours, I think you will agree that the space is being quite well-received! We have spent months curating our product selections and enjoyed so many daydreams about what the FarmStand could be. Needless to say, the reception has surpassed every expectation we could have had. THANK YOU!

This week’s CSA basket is pure and tender spring glory – there’s buttercrisp lettuce from Southern Organics, curly kale from Belle Meadow, hothouse slicing and cherry tomatoes and hothouse cucumbers from Green Leaf Nursery, English peas and more of that amazing asparagus from Farmer Hab.  So many farmers had strawberries for sale this past weekend that we couldn’t help but include some for y’all too.  These come from Mountain View Orchards and we dare you to share. They are so good! From our own farm, we’re including salad greens, sweet Romanesco pickles, duck eggs and our Instagram-worthy chive-blossom goat cheese log.  A fresh loaf of Corey Hinkel’s famous rosemary bread will be tucked in there as well.

No matter where you pick up your CSA basket – Leaf & Petal in Cahaba Heights, 119 in Greystone, Crestline or Pepper Place – know how much we appreciate you and love seeing you week in and week out. You are the reason we do what we do. Thank you.

Spring 2019 // Week 6

Stone Hollow Farmstead

Pop!

Young Collards / Hamm Farm- Cullman, Alabama

Young Collards / Hamm Farm- Cullman, Alabama

Spring is the perfect time for new beginnings and this past weekend was one such time for us. With the opening of the Pepper Place Market season on Saturday, April 13th, we celebrated the grand opening of our latest brick-and-mortar venture there, The FarmStand by Stone Hollow at Pepper Place. This space is everything we have been dreaming about having for years; filled with glorious light, plenty of room for all the wares we love to showcase, and even a little office space to boot. Plus, the location overlooks the Pepper Place Market parking lot that comes to bustling life every Saturday morning. From our vantage point, we get to see all the dogs and baby-filled strollers and happy produce shoppers each weekend. And those same customers (well, minus the canines) can come shop with us each Saturday as well as Monday through Friday! We truly are over the moon about this new chapter in our farm life.

If you are lucky enough to pick up your weekly CSA at our Pepper Place location, take an extra minute to enjoy all of the fresh blooms we’ve brought in – we’ll have large buckets teeming with poppies, delphinium, tobacco, nigella, parrot tulips, herbs, anemones, blueberry stems, lambs ear and foxglove. If you’d prefer to take home something pre-made, we’ll have full bouquets of nigella, foxglove, mint, delphinium, anemones, sweetpeas and more. These flowers are guaranteed to happy-up your home.

In the CSA basket this week, you’ll find more of what makes our relationship with local farmers so special: cucumbers from Greenleaf Nursery, mixed radish bundles from Belle Meadow, green garlic and young collards from Hamm Farms, romaine lettuce and parsley from Southern Organics as well as Asparagus from Farmer Hab.  There are English peas from Florida and shiitake mushrooms from Grandview.  Chef Corey Hinkel made dinner rolls for us this week. Our own Elegance and arugula mixed greens round out the basket.

But just like on those late-night As Seen on TV infomercials, we have to exclaim, “But wait! There’s more!” We are so excited to share one of our latest finds with our CSA friends: popcorn rice from Baker Farm in Louisiana. This fragrant, nutty-tasting rice is ubiquitous in lower Louisiana and pairs beautifully with grilled meats, holding a substantial flavor profile all its own. We can see adding those fresh peas to the cooked fluffy grains and maybe grating some lemon zest on top. Serve this rice with grilled chicken thighs or, if you’re lucky, a turkey from a recent shoot (the spring season ends in late April so your hunter still has a few more opportunities to bag a tom…) There’s no wrong way to enjoy this popcorn rice.

We look forward to hearing what you make this week with your CSA. As always, feel free to tag us on Instagram @stonehollowfarmstead or @farmstandbystonehollow
